Christmas is still a way away but the war for shoppers’ hearts and minds has begun and Argos was the first to launch its festive ad
High street giant Argos has fired the first salvo in the Christmas ad war in a bid to woo shoppers in the battle for the festive toy market.
Launched on November 3 during prime time breaks on ITV and Channel 4, the 60 second action packed commercial features an army of elves sorting out hundreds of thousands of gifts for kids around Britain – and the desperate attempts of one elf to ensure a lost toy reaches its rightful new owner.

Sound familiar? We don’t know about you, but we reckon the new Argos ad seems to share a lot of similarities with the heartfelt festive film Arthur Christmas, although Argos claim this was certainly not their inspiration.
The ad’s launch comes at the same time as their 3 for 2 toy sale started on thousands of their top brand toys which continued for 5 days.
Based at a hi-tech Argos distribution centre, one elf notices a robotic dog has made its way off the conveyor belt and on to the shop floor.
A quick scan of the Teksta toy reveals it is destined for nine-year-old Tom Benson in Newcastle but the gate to Santa’s fleet of sleighs is about to close as the supersonic vehicles prepare for take off.
In an tense few seconds, the elf grabs the dog, leaps over the production line and dives through the closing gap in the gate to land in the snow.
Commandeering a flat bed truck, the elf catches up with one of the sleighs on the runway and lobs the dog onto the back of the open sleigh, grinning as it lands safely on a soft toy.
The Ready for Take Off ad will be screened in breaks during ITV’s Emmerdale and Channel 4’s Gogglebox and Gary Kibble, Argos marketing director said: “We love this edge-of-your-seat, high-energy Christmas campaign, which aims to surprise and delight.
“Over the Christmas period our teams will deliver 1.7 million items to customers’ homes and process 27 million in-store transactions.
“We hope our super-swift, stop-at-nothing Argos Christmas elves help us once again to break the traditional retailer advertising mould by adding some excitement, energy and above all speed to the nation’s Christmases this year.”
And in a Christmas commercial first, three children will get the chance to feature in the ad in a social media campaign.
Parents can log on to Argos’ Facebook and Twitter pages and upload an image of their child using #ReadyForTakeOff in the hope of bagging their youngster one of three spots in the ad.
Each child will get a solo starring role in the commercial for a day to be broadcast on November 10, 11 and 12.
